Man Found Guilty Of Shooting At Madera Officers Faces 141-Year Sentence

Posted:
MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A man who shot at Madera police officers while in a stolen car that led them on a high-speed chase faces a 141 year to life sentence.

A Madera Superior Court jury on Wednesday convicted Matthew Edwards of four felony counts of attempted murder, four felony counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer, a felony count for possession of a firearm by a prohibited person and auto theft.

Edwards was a passenger in a stolen vehicle that led police on a high-speed chase through Madera and Fresno counties in December of 2008.

Edwards leaned out of the car and began shooting at the pursuing officers. The driver refused to yield and accelerated to speeds over 100 miles per hour

The chase ended when Edwards' vehicle crashed at Cedar and Shepard Avenues in Fresno. That's when he was arrested by a Fresno police officer.

Edwards is scheduled to be sentenced next month in the Madera Superior Court.

He faces up to 141 years to life in state prison for his convictions.
