More Dead Smelt Means Less Water For Central Valley

Too many Delta Smelt are dying in pumps, so state water officials say the Central Valley will have to make do with less water this year.

State Department of Water Resources officials say 232 smelt have been killed in the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta pumps this year.

To protect the fish, the agency says it has to cut water deliveries to the Central Valley and Southern California by 700,000 acre feet -- enough to supply more than a million homes for a year.

State officials say the problem will likely continue until changes are made in the way the delta is managed.

In a statement, valley congressman Jim Costa called the decision "absurd and devastating."
