FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State softball split its doubleheader on Saturday at Bulldog Diamond. The Bulldogs began the day with an extra inning 5-3 loss to Southern Miss and then bounced back to defeat UC Davis 4-2 in the night cap.
The ‘Dogs improve to 3-1 on the season. Fresno State had another solid day on offense recording nine hits in the night cap and a total of 16 on the day.
Junior Brooke Ortiz tallied a game-high three hits against UC Davis. Brenna Moss (2-for-4), Stesha Brazil (2-for-3), Diane Runge (2-for-3) and Michelle Solomon (2-for-4) all had a multi-hit game on Saturday.
Southern Miss scored two runs to start game one of the ‘Dogs doubleheader and took an early 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the first inning.
The Bulldogs answered in the second inning tying the game 2-2. Brazil put the ‘Dogs on the board with a solo home run to left field. It was the first home run of the season for the first baseman. Fresno State tied the game by scoring a run on an error by the Golden Eagles pitcher.
Southern Miss scored the go ahead run in the top of the third inning with an RBI single to take back the lead 3-2.
Jillian Compton took over in the circle in the fourth inning and sat the Southern Miss batters down in order. The ‘Dogs turned a double play to end the top of the fifth inning as Compton held USM scoreless for a second straight inning. The right-hander worked four scoreless innings of relief in the first game.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Brazil singled down the left line for her second hit of the game. Another throwing error brought home Brazil tying the game again at 3-3.
Solomon led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a triple to the center field fence. The Bulldogs loaded the bases, but the Golden Eagles got out of the jam sending the game into extra innings.
USM added a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly and solo home run to left field to start the eighth inning. The Golden Eagles regained the lead 5-3 and hung on for the win.
In the second game, the Bulldogs struck first against UC Davis by scoring an unearned run after Ortiz singled to right field. After one complete inning the ‘Dogs led 1-0.
The Bulldogs extended their lead after freshman Whitney Smith hit an RBI single through the right side. The ‘Dogs headed to the fourth inning with a 2-0 lead over UC Davis.
In the fifth inning, freshman Paige Gumz cleared the bases with two RBI double over the left fielder. The ‘Dogs led grew to 4-0 over the Aggies. Gumz went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Compton threw five scoreless innings before giving up two runs in the sixth inning. UC Davis cut the ‘Dogs lead down to 4-2 after a triple drove in two Aggie runners. Compton shut down the UC Davis offense in the seventh inning as the ‘Dogs won 4-2.
After two starts this weekend, Compton has two complete games and struck out 12 batters in 21 innings pitched. She has an ERA of 1.67.
The ‘Dogs conclude the 2013 Fresno State Kick-Off Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 10 at 3:45 against Sacramento State.
