8-Time DUI Offender Sentenced To 7 Years

Posted:
FRESNO COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

A man who has been convicted of driving under the influence eight times was sentenced Wednesday to seven years in state prison--the maximum prison term for the felony.

Harlan Mathis, 51, pleaded guilty to a charge of felony driving under the influence and admitted four prior felony convictions, three for felony DUI on Dec. 11, 2012. The conviction was Mathis' fifth felony DUI conviction and his eighth total conviction for driving under the influence offenses, the Fresno County District Attorney's Office said.

A civilian flagged down Fresno officers in March of 2011 to report that Mathis had been driving erratically and appeared drunk. A blood test revealed that Mathis had a 0.27 blood alcohol content, more than three times the 0.08 legal limit.

The Fresno County District Attorney's Office prosecuted Mathis as part of their Alcohol and Drug Impaired Driver Vertical Prosecution Program.

The program investigates and prosecutes alcohol and drug-impaired driving cases from arrest through sentencing and is funded by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety.
