New Assault Weapons Ban Unveiled By Feinstein

Posted: Updated:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein unveiled what some are calling the most stringent piece of gun control legislation ever to hit Capitol Hill.

Here is a break down of the bill, which Feinstein titled "Assault Weapons Ban 2013."

If passed, it would prohibit the sale, manufacture, transfer and importation of 157 of the most commonly owned rifles.

It would also ban weapons that can accept a detachable magazine, and weapons that have one or more military characteristics.

As written, it would ban large-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition, which by the way, is already in effect in California.

Unlike the 1994 ban, which expired in 2004, this bill will not expire.

Gun store owners say if passed it could be the end for them.

Merritt Gilbert of Valley Rod & Gun says, "There are quite a few shops that are dependant on this type of weapon and one has already closed down and everyone who sales these type of weapon are feeling the pinch."

Senator Dianne Feinstein says, "This is really an uphill road, if anyone asked today can you win this, the answer is we don't know it's so uphill."

Matt Savage, who is visiting the valley from North Carolina, says he cannot find ammunition anywhere.

Savage says, "In North Carolina the ammo is hard to find. I got some on order and its taking weeks and weeks."

Savage fears if the new bill becomes law, finding a new weapon will be just as tough, but only for law bidding citizens.

Savage says, "Banning them isn't going to stop the bad guy from getting them, look how many laws we have across the country look how many people we have breaking the law."

Gun advocates say California already has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country.

The state requires all new gun owners to wait 10 days.

They must also undergo an extensive background check.

Many say instead of changing gun laws, we should be concentrating on tougher enforcement of existing laws and making criminals serve their full sentences.
