School Shooting in Kern County: Accused Shooter in Court

Posted:

The teenager accused in Thursday's shooting at Taft Union High School in Kern County will be making his first court appearance this afternoon.

Kern County District Attorney Lisa Green has chosen to charge the 16-year-old as an adult.

He faces five charges, including two for attempted murder for the January 10th shooting.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood say the teen took his brother's shotgun to school that morning and targeted two classmates who, he felt, had bullied him.

One of the teens was hit in the chest—and remains in a Bakersfield hospital.

Another teen was hit with shrapnel.

Teacher Ryan Heber distracted the teen and convinced him to hand over the weapon.

Classes have been out since the shooting.

School will resume Tuesday morning.
