In a press conference on Wednesday, Obama set a January deadline for gun proposals in wake of the Sandy Hook school massacre.
With vice president Joe Biden as the lead, the president's newly assembled team of cabinet members and outside organizations will have until the end of January to come up with what president Obama calls "concrete proposals" aimed at preventing another tragedy like the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary school shootings.
Obama says, "this is not some Washington commission. This is not something where folks are going to be studying the issue for six months and publishing a report that gets read and then pushed aside."
The team will reportedly look at not only gun laws, but also mental health policies as well as examine the entertainment industry's role. Though republicans have yet to sign on to measures proposed by house and senate democrats aimed at limiting clips that hold more than ten bullets at one time, they are quietly having conversations about what role they should play.
The president was also asked about what role the national rifle association may play in the current conversation. The president replied that the NRA undoubtedly has members who are mothers and fathers and he hopes they will do some self-reflection. The NRA is set to hold a news conference on Friday.
