Conn. School Shooting: Talking To Kids About Tragic Events

With the tragic events taking place in Newtown, Conn. this past Friday, it can be difficult for some parents to find the words to explain these horrible acts to their children.

Marriage and family therapist Paul Mavrogeorge joined us on Great Day Monday morning to share information that may help parents with this process.

Talking to Children

-- Use simpler language
-- Discuss bad vs. good people
-- Comfort their emotions rather than promise safety
-- Encourage them to be brave, not fearless

Talking to Teenagers

-- May have an introspective view
-- Listen to their perspective
-- Ask them questions
-- Do not debate their view of the matter

If you have a question or comment for Paul, email us at or contact him at Link Care: (559) 439-2647.
