Upside-Down American Flag Leaves People Angry!

Posted:
ATWATER, Calif. (KMPH) -

Was it an accident or a political statement?

During a procession in Atwater for the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, an American flag turned upside-down left many in the community upset.

Residents declined to go on camera for fear of retaliation, but took pictures.

Residents say they could not believe their eyes when they saw 'Old Glory' upside down, while the flag of Mexico hung correctly.

The Diocese of Fresno says the Guadalupana Society in Atwater organized the event.

Diocese of Fresno Chancellor Teresa Dominguez says, "This is the first that I'm hearing about it. I plan to investigate, call and verify with the organization to see if it was intentionally or inadvertently placed that way."

Many who attended the event say it was a mistake.

Omar Mora says, "Sometimes people put things up in a hurry and don't pay attention to detail. So I'm guessing that's why it came out like this."

Members of the Guadalupana Society saw the pictures and profusely apologized.

Ruben Mena with the Guadalupana Society says, "That was a big mistake; I wasn't aware of it. But we will point it out and make sure it doesn't happen again."

Ruben Mena says he is a proud American and plans to bring it up at the next board meeting,

He says steps will be put into place to make sure something like this will never happen again.
