Five People Hit By Car During Church Procession

Posted: Updated:
GOSHEN, Calif. (KMPH) -

Five people were hurt after a car plowed into a crowd of parishioners near a Goshen church.

California Highway Patrol investigators say just before 5:00 a.m. Wednesday they received a call of several people hit by a car on Road 68 south of Avenue 308.

A group of about 25 people had gathered as part of a procession in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe outside St. Thomas The Apostle Church.

The CHP says the group was traveling northbound on Road 68 when a car drove up behind them, hitting several people.

It was dark at the time, and the driver told officers he did not see the people in the middle of the road.

Investigators say the group had no traffic control personnel or flashlights. They say each person was carrying a lit candle, but the flames were not visible to the rear.

Five people were hurt; one of them suffered major injuries.

The other four, including a 3-year-old girl, are expected to be okay.

The victims were taken to Kaweah Delta Medical Center. Two people have since been released.

The driver did stay on scene and cooperated with investigators. It's not known if he will face any charges.

There are county ordinances that require a permit for processions like this. It's not known if the group had filed the paperwork to get a permit.
