Sheriff: 'Explosive' At School Was Plumbing Tool

Posted: Updated:

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Kern County Sheriff's officials say what they thought was an explosive device at a Bakersfield high school turned out to be a plumbing tool.

The tool was seen in a restroom at North High School during the lunch hour, prompting students to be evacuated and the sheriff's bomb squad to be dispatched.

Sheriff's spokesman Ray Pruitt says it resembled a pipe bomb, but turned out to be harmless. He says it's unclear who left it in the bathroom. The school has been undergoing construction.
