MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -

The California Highway Patrol says a man and two women were killed in a crash in Madera County Tuesday morning.

The crash was reported shortly before 8 a.m. at Highway 152 and Road 16; that's south of Chowchilla.

According to the CHP, 38-year-old Liwei Xu, of San Leandro, was driving a big rig westbound on the highway while a Honda was traveling eastbound.

Officers say Xu crossed into the eastbound lanes to avoid a semi truck that had overturned and spilled its load of cotton bales earlier in the morning. They say the big rig then crashed into the front of the Honda.

The Honda's driver and two passengers were killed. The coroner's office has identified them as 49-year-old Thang Quoc Dang, 48-year-old Thuy Trang Dang, and 54-year-old Thanh Nhan Thi Nguyen. All three were from San Jose.

The driver of the big rig was taken to an area hospital. He was not badly hurt.

Investigators say there was some fog in the area at the time of the accident.

One lane of the highway was closed in each direction. Both lanes were reopened around 11:30 a.m.
