KINGS COUNTY, Calif. (KMPH) -
The man who was shot and killed by a deputy in Kings County over the weekend has been identified.
The Kings County Sheriff's Department has identified him as 53-year-old Steven Crawley.
Shortly before noon Saturday, Crawley's family members called for help, saying he was swinging a golf club wildly around his house on Kansas Avenue, south of Hanford. They said he was breaking things and threatening to hurt them.
Kings County Assistant Sheriff Dave Putnam said deputies tried to calm Crawley down and negotiate with him.
Instead, Putnam said, Crawley charged at the deputies with his club. One deputy opened fire, shooting him twice.
Crawley was taken to Adventist Medical Center in Hanford where he later died.
The deputy who shot the man is a 10-year veteran with the Kings County Sheriff's Department and is on paid administrative leave.
