FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

Authorities say three people are dead and two others are injured following a workplace shooting in Central Fresno.

The shooting happened around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at Valley Protein, which is located on Hedges and Abby.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer said 42-year-old Lawrence Jones, a discharged parolee, clocked in to work at the business just before 5 a.m.

Dyer said about three and a half hours later, Jones pulled out a .357 Derringer handgun and shot four co-workers and then himself.

Salvador Diaz, 32, suffered a gunshot wound to the side of his head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Manuel Verdin, 34, was shot in the head. He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center where he died.

Arnulfo Conrriquez, 28, was shot in the neck. He was taken to the hospital where he was last listed in critical condition.

Fatima Lopez, 32, was shot in the buttocks as she ran away. She was taken to CRMC and was released Tuesday afternoon.

Chief Dyer said Jones put the gun up to the head of a fifth co-worker and pulled the trigger but was out of bullets. That person was not injured.

Dyer said Jones then walked outside, reloaded the gun and shot himself in the head. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The chief said Jones had an extensive criminal history, which included robbery and burglary convictions.

There were 65 workers inside the business at the time of the shooting. Dyer said many of them didn't know what was happening because they were wearing ear plugs.

Valley Protein is a meat-processing plant. It was formerly called Apple Valley Farms but was renamed in 2010 after going through bankruptcy.

Blackstone and Abby were closed from Olive to McKinley for several hours as police conducted their investigation.
