NYC Marathon Canceled; Runners Head To Fresno

Posted:
FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

With the New York City Marathon now canceled, dozens of runners from there are now planning to run in the Central Valley this weekend.

Hundreds showed up at Chukchansi Park on Friday for the Sierra Pacific Orthopedics Health & Fitness Expo and to sign up for the Two Cities Marathon & Half in Fresno.

Even while they were doing that, race officials say the calls from disappointed runners looking for someplace else to run were pouring in.

"We even had people that called us from the Denver airport because they were actually in Denver getting ready to get on a plane to go to New York, heard that it was canceled and called us and said, 'can I get in?'" said Debra Schmitt, co-executive race director of the Two Cities Marathon.

Schmitt says about 40 people who planned to run in New York have already signed up to run in Fresno, and they plan to make room for up to 100 or more.

The Two Cities Marathon & Half takes place Sunday, November 4.
