A pair of Fresno Unified maintenance workers is being praised for helping to stop a runaway driver.
Police say a 38-year-old woman was driving under the influence of prescription drugs.
Officers think she was on Norco and Soma.
Police say she hit a parked car, several curbs, and narrowly missed a bicyclist while traveling through several school zones.
Cops were alerted to the woman's erratic driving thanks to a couple of Fresno Unified maintenance workers, Walter Silva and his co-worker.
Walter and his co-worker were traveling east on Ashlan, they just passed Woodrow Wilson Elementary School when they noticed in their rear view mirror a female driver weaving in and out of traffic. They pulled over and they say she almost sideswiped them. They saw her take a left on West towards Shaw Avenue.
They said something must be wrong and decided to follow her, that's when Walter says he saw her hit and jump the curb.
Walter Silva says, "I saw her take out 3 trash cans, just miss a telephone pole by a couple of feet and blew out her right front tire and kept going."
Walter says he then noticed a bicyclist on the road.
Walter Silva says, "My co-worker started to honk his horn and notify him. She passed him luckily and swerved to the other side."
Walter says the driver then sideswiped a parked car.
Walter says it didn't faze her or stop her.
After making a right on Shaw Avenue the guys followed her for several blocks. She ended up making another right on Harrison and stopped right in front of Bullard Talent Elementary School. As Walter got on the phone with 9-1-1, his co-worker got out of the car and tried to stop the woman.
Walter says she ended up taking off again.
Walter Silva says, "She said she was going a little bit further and she went ahead and took off, and we decided to keep following her."
A few blocks away, cops caught up with the 38-year-old driver thanks to Walter's directions.
Fresno Unified administrators say they're proud.
A humble guy, Walter says he was just at the right place at the right time.
Walter Silva says, "Hopefully everyone in the community would do the same thing. I mean police officers can't be everywhere at every moment, as a community we got to look out for each other."
Walter says looking out for each other is something he plans to continue to do.
