MADERA, Calif. (KMPH) -
A car crashed into a Madera home Monday night, and police believe the man behind the wheel, along with three other people, may have been involved in a shooting just a few minutes earlier.
It all started around 8:30 p.m. when Madera Police got reports of a shootout in the area of Olive and Santa Cruz streets.
Officers saw a black Mercedes roll through a stop sign, so they decided to pull the car over, said police spokesman Sgt. Dino Lawson.
When the Mercedes came to a stop, three people ran out of the car and the driver sped away, police said.
The Mercedes then ended up crashing into a home along West Fourth Street.
Police say the driver -- later identified as 23-year-old Jorge Velasquez-Mina -- had been shot in the hip and had a large cut on his head. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Officers say they searched the Mercedes and found a gun inside.
Velasquez-Mina was found to be on parole, Lawson said. He was later arrested on several charges including carrying a concealed weapon and participating in a criminal street gang.
Police say they have arrested two people who ran from the Mercedes. A 17-year-old was booked into Juvenile Hall, while 26-year-old Antonio Ruiz was booked into the Madera County Department of Corrections on several charges.
