CLOVIS, Calif. (KMPH) -
A Clovis church has discovered a new use for the Rubik's Cube. Its youth minister is using thousands of cubes to create art once the puzzle is solved.
They call themselves the Cubecreators. In a matter of hours the youth group from First Baptist Church of Clovis has created Buddy the Elf, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Denver Broncos Quarterback Tim Tebow, and its latest work of art...all four teams playing in Sunday's football conference championship games.
Nick Bradley is the youth Minister. "A few years ago I started teaching kids how to solve the cube. I've taught about 150 kids how to solve it. But after you solve the cubes many times what do you do from there?"
Nick Bradley decided to buy 9,000 cubes and get creative. He also videotapes the kids as they create a work of art. "Dude I thought that was the coolest idea. I love making videos of the different things we're doing here just to kind of show other people what we're doing here. Christians have fun too," said youth member Kevin Freeman.
Creating art requires some math and being savvy with a computer. "We break it down to the number of pixels that we have here. We have about 900 cubes so that's 8,100 pixels. So I need a picture to be broken down that much and I need to tell the software you only have six colors to work with," said Bradley.
The art project is also serving as a magnet to draw more young people to church. "It's so fun. It gives the youth a way to bring friends to church and just encourage them to enjoy spending time with each other," said youth member Lauren Purvis.
The church group now wants to use the creative art to raise funds for missions to Mexico. With the cubes they can make pictures of anyone for a price. If you would like to have the youth group build you a work of art contact the First Baptist Church of Clovis.
