Two Fresno County public employees' unions have lost an attempt to get pay cuts imposed by the County Board Of Supervisors halted.
The SEIU Local 521 and the California Nurses' Association asked the state Public Employment Relations Board to stop the county's across-the-board 9% pay cuts.
The unions wanted the board to stop the cuts while a lawsuit filed by the unions goes forward. On Tuesday, January 17, 2012 the board refused.
The two unions represent around 4,200 Fresno County Government employees.
The Board of Supervisors issued a statement to KMPH News that reads:
Fresno County understands that the salary reductions have been difficult for all County employees and we value the services the County workforce provides to the citizens of Fresno County. The cuts were necessary to reduce the costs of County operations in order to avoid/minimize future workforce and service reductions. The County remains fully committed to working with employee Unions and Associations to reach mutual agreement regarding labor contracts.
KMPH News has repeatedly reached out to the SEIU for comment on this wage battle, but the union will not respond.
