From the time Jim McElwain left Fresno State to become the offensive coordinator at Alabama, a lot of Bulldog football fans have been hoping he might come back as head coach.
Well, there is still a chance. Although it did not look good last night when it was reported McElwain was working out the final contract details to become head coach at Memphis.
But after first accepting an offer, he changed his mind. When he balked, Memphis hired somebody else.
Now McElwain is back on the market, and has had initial conversations with Fresno State. Maybe that's what made him change his mind.
Meanwhile, former Fresno State player and assistant coach Mike Martz, now the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, plans to return to that job next year.
His contract runs out at the end of the season, and his name has been linked to head coaching vacancies at Fresno State, Arizona State and the Jacksonville Jaguars.
On Wednesday, Martz said he was bothered by the rumors, adding he plans to return to Chicago next season and wants to be there.
