Knockout! Fresno Boxer Makes Olympic Team

FRESNO, Calif. (KMPH) -

The Central Valley has produced another Olympian. I am happy to report tonight that Gary Salazar's efforts have paid off.  The Fresno boxer has made the Guatemalan Olympic Team, and expects to fight in the summer games in London, less than one year from now.

We have been following Salazar since he was 13, winning just about every national championship in sight.

His dream was to fight for the United States Olympic Team, but...now at 16...he is too young to attempt to qualify, and Team USA would not give him a waiver.

So he took his only other option. When the native country of his parents showed interest, they all flew to Guatemala for tryouts. They will return home Thursday night.

Salazar will attend two training camps in England and the Dominican Republic. While he has a spot on the Olympic team, the Fresno teen must still win two bouts in an international competition in Brazil next year to guarantee he will actually fight in the Olympics.  But it looks like a lock. Salazar would fight at either 123 or 132 pounds next summer in London.
