LOS ANGELES (AP) - The former city manager of Bell has been sentenced to 12 years in state prison for a corruption scheme that nearly bankrupted the small city just outside Los Angeles. Robert Rizzo was sentenced today in Los Angeles Superior Court, where he earlier pleaded no contest to 69 counts including conspiracy, misappropriation of public funds and falsification of public records.

INDUSTRY, Calif. (AP) - A man is being treated for critical burns after he was found on the side of a Southern California freeway yesterday afternoon. KABC-TV reports that the man's hands and feet were partially tied and he had severe burns over his entire body, including his face and head. He managed to crawl from a wash beneath to the freeway to the roadside.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - It took about an hour this morning for about 40 Los Angeles firefighters to knock down a small blaze in Griffith Park. The fire burned vegetation in an area between Griffith Observatory and the Greek Theatre. No structures were threatened and no one was injured.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A swimmer who died after being pulled from the water off Orange County has been identified as a 19-year-old Lakewood man. The Orange County Register reports Damian Frierson Jr. had been swimming Monday with two friends, who saw him go under the waves and called emergency personnel.
