GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (AP) - Police say a 13-year-old boy is being held in an Orange County juvenile hall after taking handgun and a loaded magazine to school. Garden Grove police said officers who responded to a classroom at Jordan Intermediate School on Monday found a .38-caliber handgun in the boy's backpack, and a loaded magazine in his pants pocket. Police say four students who saw the gun but didn't speak up will also be punished.
IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Early-morning traffic is backed up for miles following a fatal two-vehicle collision on Interstate 5 in Orange County. The CHP says the crash in the northbound lanes was reported near the Jamboree Road onramp in Irvine about 4:40 a.m. Witnesses say a car struck the center divider and then veered back into lanes, when it was hit by another vehicle.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - A former San Diego police officer has been ordered to stand trial in one of several sexual assault cases that have rocked the department. A judge ordered Christopher Hays to stand trial on two felony counts of false imprisonment and three misdemeanor counts of sexual battery. The alleged incidents, denied by Hays who has pleaded not guilty, involved four women during the late months of last year.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - A cooling-off period has been called in the fight between the makers of a popular hot sauce and Irwindale, the city that says its air is too spicy to bear. City Council delayed a decision for two weeks last night on declaring the Sriracha (suhr-AH'-chuh) plant a public nuisance. The city attorney requested the delay, saying he's in settlement talks with attorneys for Sriracha maker Huy Fong Foods.
