Merced, CA- The newest member of the Merced School board may have some recent school experience to draw upon.

21-year-old Adam Cox was installed on Tuesday as the newest member of the Board of Education of the Merced City School District.

Cox is the youngest public official in Merced County, and the youngest school board member in the Central Valley.

"I'm very excited to be a school board member...it wasn't long ago that I was a student in the District. I'm looking forward to working with my colleagues on the board as well as the other stakeholders to continue offering a top-notch education to the students in Merced. The next few years will undoubtedly be rough for California's school districts, but I'm confident that by working openly and professionally with the students, parents, bargaining units and administrators, we can expect nothing less than a quality education for our youth," Cox told KMPH.

"I may be young, but I am proud to be able to serve my community and give back to the educational system that helped shape who I am today," he said.

Merced City School District is the largest district in Merced County, serving almost 11,000 students.

Cox isn't the only new member to be sworn in on Tuesday. Newcomer Jessica Kazakos and incumbent Darrel Cherf were also installed on the board.
